The City of Lost Angels

My most excellent friend Joe Stump has just published a great blog post about the cities he’s lived in. Speifically San Francisco Boulder Portland Seattle I think on most days I’m just as much of a tech nerd as he is, but during the entire time he’s talking about in his post (and, actually, considerably [...]

Sweet December Coming Soon

Been busy. Traveling mostly. My life really did resemble Up in the Air for a few months there. But I’m back, and mostly unscathed. Two weeks in NY and Nashville in November around Thanksgiving should do it for airports and me for 2010. As I get older years seem to go by a lot faster [...]

Letters From the Road

I've been traveling a lot recently. Dublin Ireland, Washington DC, LA, Boston, Lake Tahoe... and now I'm off to London for FOWA. A close friend pointed out recently that this was how Tyler Durden came to life.

"You wake up at Seatac, SFO, LAX. You wake up at O'Hare, Dallas-Fort  Worth, BWI. Pacific, mountain, central. Lose an hour, gain an hour. This  is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time. You wake up at Air  Harbor International. If you wake up at a different time, in a different  place, could you wake up as a different person?"

And Before the year is out, I'll be in New York, then New York again, then Nashville, and I'm sure I'll be in San Francisco at some point.

When I was little traveling seemed exotic to me. It was something people who were jet setters did, or important businessmen, or at the very very least it was something that grownups did. I'm 35 and I should probably just start owning up to the fact that I am in fact an adult, despite the fact that I work in an industry where jeans and flip flops are normal work attire, and my friends and I all use the word "dude" when referring to each other. All the same, it's a little unnerving at times, and there are moments when I look up and realize that I'm in an airport, but remembering which one takes a few more seconds than it should.

I'm not complaining. I have an amazing job, I like to travel, and I get to see a lot of my far-away friends more than most people do. What the time on the road does make you appreciate, though, is how nice home can be.

London will be great, no doubt, but I'm already looking forward to getting back to Venice Beach.

I’m addicted to data

If there’s one thing I’ve realized very quickly on this trip to Dublin, it’s that I’m completely addicted to having a data connection basically all the time. Must. Find. Vodafone. Store…

The War on Drugs

Like many of my peers, I believe that the so-called “War on Drugs” that the United States along with many other countries is engaged in, is ridiculous. It has produced no tangible results after decades of enforcement and trillions of dollars spent. Yet it continues, despite the fact that other approaches have been demonstrated to [...]

Oracle’s MySQL

I suppose this shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me. Inevitable really. But all the same, it was a bit of a shock to see it for the first time this evening… Oh the times they are a changin’!

MongoDB 1.4.0 for CentOS 5

I know I haven’t posted anything in forever. I mean well! I’m working on an article outlining an introduction to encryption with GPG, as well as my own thoughts about all the NoSQL hoopla currently going on. But for now, I’ve built RPM packages for MongoDB 1.4.0 for CentOS 5 systems to my Yum repository. Both [...]

MongoDB 1.2.2 for CentOS 5

I’ve built RPM packages for MongoDB 1.2.2 that are native to RHEL5 / CentOS5 systems. They’re in my Yum repository now. Note that I’ve also built newer packages for the Boost libraries because Mongo likes newer versions than the ones bundled with the distro. Packages are available for i386 as well as x86_64, and there [...]

What I hope I take away from 2009

It’s simple, and I think best expressed by this graphic (my favorite from 2009).
